FORT MYERS, Fla. — Making his first appearance of the spring, Daniel Bard [1] struck out the side in facing Northeastern in the second inning of the Huskies’ game against the Red Sox [2]. The reliever threw 18 pitches, 13 of which were strikes, while allowing a hit on the first batter he faced (Connor Lyons).

More than half of Bard’s offerings were sliders — which, for the most part, proved effective. The righty had some problems with fastball command, with his first pitch clocking in at 94 mph.

Prior to Bard, closer Joel Hanrahan got through his only inning of work by giving up a hit, while striking out a pair. He finished throwing 17 pitches (13 strikes).

Bard entered the game with the lead, with the Red Sox having scored on an RBI double from Jarrod Saltalamacchia [3] off the left field wall, scoring Shane Victorino [4].
