FORT MYERS, Fla. — Well John Lackey has the art of getting out of a big jam down so far in spring training.

In his first 10 pitches Saturday against the Rays at JetBlue Park, he walked Ben Zobrist on five pitches, allowed a first-pitch single to Desmond Jennings and hit Matt Joyce on the fourth pitch of the at-bat to load the bases with none out.

Lackey rebounded to strike out Jack Cust swinging on four pitches, one of his two swing-and-miss offerings on the day. Ryan Roberts drove a 1-0 pitch to right field for a sacrifice fly to score Zobrist.

Lackey completed his comeback, getting Sean Rodriguez to fly out to right for the final out.

His line: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K and 1 HBP on 20 pitches, 10 strikes.

His pitch-by-pitch went like this:

Zobrist: BBBLB
Jennings: X (single to left)
Joyce: BFBX(hit by pitch)
Cust: BLLS
Roberts: BX(Sac fly to right)
Rodriguez: SBLX (fly to right)

Imagine if he was facing the A lineup–that’d be ugly!

9.00 era 18.00 whip. Lackeys back in town

  • AL34

Great with Lackey back, our possibilities are unlimited. Boy did Scosia know what he was doing or what for letting this clown hit the road.

this guy is a stiff and has always been a stiff. The year before he signed with the sox he beat a team with a winning record 3 times all year. Tampa is one of the worst hitting teams in the american league, i am surprised they didn’t start him agains’t BC, somebody he might be able to get out. This guy will lose more then 12 games and win less the 14

  • Fab4ever

I will be one guy who will remind you of this quote….let’s call it 12-14 for the season….

  • lackey+salty=disaster

Loose definition of rebound. Lackey sucks.

  • Doug

You’re a real loser, give the guy credit, it’s been a long time & he’s gonna have a fine season in spite of negative bus throwers like yourself.  If he threw a one hitter you’d find fault with it.

  • Doug

By the looks of these posts, all the snipers and fault finders are busy, they know not the meaning of sportsmanship or supoporting one of their own, they are very adept at burying people, 99% of these fault finders will be cheering for him when he starts mowing down opposing lineups.

  • Boring Media Hype

Don’t blame Lackey.  We all would have taken the money if it was on the table in front of us.  It took a miracle trade to purge this team of most of its overpaid baggage last year.  They throw money at players like its water and expect them to actually work hard for it.  As long as guaranteed contracts are the norm baseball will forever be the boring POS it has become

  • Boring Media Hype

Don’t count on that happening.  It’s more likely the only thing Lackey will be mowing down is his lawn

  • Uncle Buck

    Thank you.  Some sanity.

Considering what Lackey was up against with all critical eye’s on him,his 1 inning was very good.He has’nt been on the mound in a year and a half he had to be very nervous.Bases loaded and no outs what was he thinking knowing that they’re were those hoping he would fail.Under those conditions i thought he was very good the way he bore down and did his job.Good going John.

Comments like that show everyone your ignorance about the game, your knowledge of human nature as to the pressure that man was under.I would imagine that your outlook on life in general isn’t very bright. To say that the guy sucked says alot about yourself.Sorry you said it not me.

Another foolish comment. All hitters at this point suck. Both pitching staffs did well because they are well ahead of the hitters. If you don’t know anything about baseball, why the hell are you making comments>

I know your not related to Jimmy.

You are right.I find it funny when people say he’s on a contract year he’ll be playing his butt off. What doe’s that mean that they don’t always play their butts off? Yes in many cases, long term contracts are coming to an end by and large and thats good for the fans and the game.

I’m amazed that this loser stiff is still pitching. How can you defend him?

  • anguillaman3

I think Lackey will pitch more in line with his pre-injury numbers…probably win 14-15 games , he will be a decent pitcher.
