Allen Webster steals the show in Red Sox win over Blue Jays 02.25.13 at 4:19 pm ET

DUNEDIN, Fla. – With much of the fan-fare directed at the matchup between knuckleball starting pitchers Steven Wright of the Red Sox and Toronto’s R.A. Dickey Tuesday, the most notable takeaway may have been the Sox’ second pitcher – Allen Webster.

Webster, one of the pieces the Sox garnered from the Dodgers in the teams’ massive trade last August, did allow a run on two hits over two innings. But the final numbers didn’t paint the most important picture during the Red Sox’ 4-2 win over the Blue Jays.

After allowing an RBI double to Melky Cabrera, Webster went on to strike out four Blue Jays batters in a row. Make the feat more impressive was that those hitters – Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion, J.P. Arencibia and Brett Lawrie – are considered to be the meat of the Jays’ batting order once the regular season rolls around.

During the run, Webster – usually known for topping out in the mid-90’s – hit 99 mph on the Florida Auto Exchange Stadium radar gun one offering after clocking in at 98 mph.

“When it started out my heart was racing, the first start of the year,” the soft-spoken Webster said. “I finally got settled down.”

Webster had no explanation for the increase in velocity, only suggesting that he had gotten stronger and remained within himself mechanically. (“I don’t feel any different. It’s about the same as last year,” he said.)

But it wasn’t hard to notice that his stuff stood out. It offered an example of why he managed to strikeout 12 batters in his nine innings with Double-A Portland last season.

And, this time, he managed the results despite dealing with a healthy dose of nerves.

“All of them,” Webster said when asked which of the Toronto hitters elicited the most anxiety.

While Webster said after the performance his goal was to begin the season at Triple-A Pawtucket, the biggest challenge he faces as camp progresses is an ability to show an improved command.

So far, so good.

“Equally impressive to the arm strength, and the action of his fastball, is that he has a secondary pitch he can go to as a put-away with his changeup. And when he gets in trouble he has the ability to slow people down with a power change that has some action to it,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said. “He was impressive. Very impressive.”

The offensive star for the Red Sox was Jackie Bradley Jr., who continued to impress during his stint in major league camp.

“He’s running down a fly ball to the exact spot. He’s hitting good pitching, both right-handers and left-handers,” Farrell said. “Any time you have young players come into camp you’re hopeful he’s going to make a positive impression, and he certainly has gotten off to a very strong start.”

     Things is a lookin up.

  • Uncle Buck

That’s encouraging.  I hope somehow this team can uncover an unseen gem or two this year.  They will need that.

This kid looks good. I just hope ben does the right thing and calls him up THIS year if he ends up pitching well in triple A. He should be the guy they plug in first when an injury happens. Don’t keep him down in the minors just cause u think he “needs time to develop”. Sox fans should be really excited about this kid. Webster and Bogaerts are the two people in the organization i’m personally most excited about.

Sox are not quite ready to make a serious run at a World Series just yet. Control the innings of Webster and Ruby for 2013. Come 2014 these two with a 1/2 season under their belts and Barnes knocking on the door and this team will look a lot better.

Buchholz, De La Rosa, Webster, Barnes, Doubront. Sounds like a rotation I’d love to have.

  • Farrell be a Maddon

Do what the Rays do with young pitchers with good stuff and bring them up and shine in the big time.

  • Fab4ever

Good points….and to all the haters, this team will be fun to watch….

  • H Bouley

Wow! Webster, Rubby and Lester looking like Cy Young candidates already! That and Jackie bradley looking like rookie of the year and MVP all in one. Hard to see how the Sox will lose a game this year LOL

  • ih8sno

If things pan out, Sox could have some veteran trade bait come trade deadline time. Stay tuned!

You’re a bad troll you life-less turd. Go get a woman.

  • ChrisinDanvers

It’s great to hear some encouraging news about the young players in the system as well. Between Bradley and Webster, yesterday’s game was just another reminder that there is a lot to look forward to with this team if not just for this year, then the coming years.

Its always fun to watch a train wreck

  • Pedro

    Maybe in 86 years?

  • Craig2174

Where did you see him pitch last year?

  • Rcsully65

Only if pedro gets in Doubront’s head and gets him to get into shape.

She said in her post that she saw them in L.A.

I haven’t seen Webster yet in person but I did see De La Rosa a couple years back. The latter was blowing away big league hitters with promising regularity in his previous stint with the Dodgers. By all accounts these two are very high-ceiling prospects. De La Rosa is coming off TJ surgery, but these days that’s almost a plus once the rehab is truly complete.

I was stunned last summer when I heard that the Dodgers gave these guys up to take on the entire albatross of the Gonzo, Crawford, and Beckett salaries. I thought it amazing enough that they were willing to take all that off the Sox’ hands, let alone throw in two truly compelling pitching prospects in the deal. From the Dodgers’ POV, it may make some kind of sense–if Crawford truly is healed up and his head’s back together, he’s a fine outfielder and solid offensive presence, and though Gonzalez was not the power threat in the AL East that he projected to be, he should be a strong contributor to LA’s offense and is,as we have seen, a first-rate IB. And Beckett may have a couple good gallons left in the tank as a pitcher; he’s a very smart competitor who’s been learning how to compete with diminished stuff. Traditionally LA, like Oakland and Tampa Bay, scouts pitchers with the best of ‘em, and that organization probably has more good prospects where Webster and De La Rosa came from; so again, however incredible it is from our POV, for the newly cash-rich Dodger franschise the trade may make at least some kind of sense.

But from the Sox perspective? A magical theft. Dumped the salaries that had paralyzed the organization going forward and restocked the pitching pipeline in one fell swoop. So folks should give Ben Cherrington his props here. The fate of pitchers is never certain–you have to knock on wood and hope potential becomes achievement, for Webster and De La Rosa as for Barnes and Wright and others for whom we have good hopes. But from a projectible-talent POV, to get these arms included in the deal was outstanding work on Mr. C’s part under absurdly challenging circumstances with limited leverage.

Sounds good at some point but you are not going to win with a rookie pitching staff. And leave Lester out of it? You have to be joking.Lester is the man they are depending on to turn it around, until he’ proves that he can’t.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

Don’t forget Napoli has’nt played yet and he will produce. And David Ortiz will produce in the DH hole. They seem to be confident that he’ll be ready. He’s taking batting practice and there’s no reason to rush him.He has nothing to prove with his bat.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

They’ll bring him up if they need him.But lets see what he can do in triple A first.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

You have no idea if they’ll need them or not.Quarterbacking thats all it is and means nothing until they get on the field fit and ready. This team should be pretty good.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

The FO are not a stupid as thought are they.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

Hell either shape up or ship out.It appears that they have a couple to pick up to fill his spot in the rotation.Dubront showed that he has potential, but without the proper mentalilty he won’t make the grade.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

I know your team isn’t in very good shape.I know for certain that your not a Boston fan,and infantile comments mean nothing.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

    You hope.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

He may have the stuff but it does’nt mean he’s quite ready yet. They make big bucks making those decisions thats why we’re commenting on our compputors giving various opinions.Let them do their jobs.

  • H Bouley

I am married and NOT a troll, but a life long Sox fan trying to keep Sox fans from getting carried away due to a few good  early signs. No sense in doing cartwheels… at least not yet.  :)

  • http://twitter.com/Zj_6 Zack Jones

this would a few years from now. Certainly not right now haha didn’t mean to confuse

  • http://twitter.com/Zj_6 Zack Jones

Gaining weight doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll pitch worse. What he really needs is to attack hitters. Get that pitch count down. He showed some guts late in the season when he was WAY out of gas. He had a lot of innings but he managed to throw some nice ones toward the end. It’ll be fun to watch
