Bobby Valentine at Sacred Heart intro: ‘I thought I did a hell of a job in Boston’ 02.26.13 at 2:01 pm ET
By Jerry Spar

Bobby Valentine was introduced as Sacred Heart's new athletic director Tuesday. (Sacred Heart)

Former Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine, appearing at a Tuesday press conference announcing his appointment as athletic director at Sacred Heart University (video below), promised that his new job is a challenge he is taking very seriously.

Asked right off the bat how he would respond to people who say his appointment is a joke, Valentine responded (via the Connecticut Post): “If it’s a joke, it’s an inside joke. I’m very serious about everything I do in my life. I deal with passion and commitment and I deal with excellence.”

Valentine, who officially takes over July 1, apparently is not locked into his position for any set time, and he did not rule out a return to baseball.

“It’s a term that will last until it’s no longer beneficial to each other,” Valentine said of his contract with Sacred Heart, a Division 1 school in Fairfield, Conn., near his hometown of Stamford.

“It’s a significant and wonderful moment for Sacred Heart University,” said Jim Barquinero, senior vice president for intercollegiate athletics and student affairs. “Bobby’s a leader and brings great energy.”

Barquinero said the school also will hire a “deputy athletics director” to work with Valentine. Outgoing AD Don Cook, 72, is retiring after two decades at the helm.

Valentine, 62, managed the Sox for one season, getting the boot last fall after a disastrous 69-93 campaign. However, he said he doesn’t view his performance as a failure.

“I thought I did a hell of a job in Boston,” Valentine said. “I thought what had to be done there was done except for winning a pennant. But Connie Mack wasn’t going to win with that team.”

Added Valentine: “It’s six months of a 62-year life. It’s six months of a 42-year career in baseball. It’s a blip, a little spot on the radar, as far as I’m concerned.”

In an interview with the Connecticut Post on Monday, Valentine insisted he’s not taking the job for the publicity.

“Why would I need the publicity?” he said. “I wouldn’t understand the question and I wouldn’t dignify it with an answer.”

Valentine also chatted with Boston Herald columnist Steve Buckley on Monday, telling Buckley that he had no interest in rebutting some of the critical remarks made about him at Red Sox spring training.

“I don’t want to comment on stupid things that stupid people say,” Valentine said. “I’m not going to comment on any of that.”

In Bobby V’s world ‘Hell of a job’ equals 69-93 record ..’saved baby from burning building’ equals 82-80..’cured cancer’ equals 95-67…”averted 5 mild wide asteroid from hitting the earth” equals 110-52..

  • Chris

He did a hell of a job screwing everything up

  • Dano50

“I thought I did a hell of a job in Boston,” Valentine said. “I thought what had to be done there was done except for winning a pennant. But Connie Mack wasn’t going to win with that team.”
Bobby V. on the other hand, would not have won given the “98″ Yankee team.

I know…I know…shouldn’t “comment on stupid things that stupid people say”.  Right Bobby?

  • Jimy Williams

why do i get the feeling that bobby valentine wears women’s underwear around his house?

  • Anonymous

    Heckuva job, Bobby!

  • Enough Said

I think what Bobby meant to say was it was like hell for all involved as he attempted to do his job.

  • Bob M.

I guess he must have set the bar at ground level.

  • Fab4ever

Wow. Well, one thing he isn’t; and that’s lacking esteem….I’ll buy the comment that he thought he did a good job with “that team”, meaning, it was a mess….but he didn’t fo a great job in the true definition…the team did suck but he made it suck harder….

  • Tedsox

I have one question for Bobby V. “Is a leader a good leader when nobody follows”. Bobby V. has the delusional belief that he knows the only way to success and if you don’t follow then you are “stupid” or “the worst team in history”. The biggest improvement on this team is getting rid of that clown.

  • LarryfromNewburyport

Wait an asinine thing to say! smarten up!

  • LarryfromNewburyport

The red sox had MORE injuries than any team in baseball HISTORY,yet all the blame is on him???

  • Anonymous

Bobby V! So good to hear from you again, now go home and get your shine box.

  • LarryfromNewburyport

You people are all idiots….Valentine managed with what he had to work with…..the sox had MORE INJURIES than any team in baseball HISTORY last year!…..don’t you ALL remember when he had a triple A lineup at the end of the year?……he wasn’t a miracle worker!!!!!

  • fromtheshire

The number of people that believe that to be true just went from ZERO to ONE! And I guess the ONE was already there because that’s the first we’re heard about his “job well done” vote.

  • BobbyVjockStrap

you sure did!!! You brought this team straight to hell.

     What is Sacred Heart thinking?

  • Eanxdivr

Could he possibly be any more arrogant?

  • Steve

Keep patting yourself on the back bOOby.

  • Bad owners decisions

In his defense they hired the staff and then the manager. That is a situation  destined to fail. The inmates ran the prison.

  • jimromeisasass

    @ffe0987a39b170b909c38ebb8505018e:disqus - i think you mean “managed”.  settle down it’s a new season. give the CAP’S & !!!!!!!!’s a rest.

  • Jack Chase

If he did such a heck of a job, why did he not have Pedro, Lowell, Varitek and Wake in ST to help out like Farrell is doing this year?  Oh, yeah, it’s because none of those guys knows baseball the way Bobby knows baseball.

  • Gomer

Heckuva job, Brownie.  Er, ah, I meant, Bobby!  Way not to let reality get in the way of your self-image.

  • Cubesq

James Buchanan did a helluva job as President using the Valentine standard.

Delusions of grandeur again Bobby V.?

  • Tuck

    More like a hell job

  • Frank

    What a joke!

  • Enough Said

No, the roster that he had at the end of the year wasn’t good at all, Larry, but what about the roster he had at the beginning of the year? He never meshed well with the team at all, and multiple reports starting from spring training provide good evidence that he lost the clubhouse very early on… then there’s all the hypocritical comments he’d make, contradicting himself often in the same press conference, and throwing members of the organization under the bus.

He needs to take blame for the Red Sox failures last season and not say something completely asinine like, “I thought I did a hell of a job in Boston”.  (Btw, he is contradicting himself yet again here… during many of his season-ending interviews, he regretted the way he handled many things and criticized some of his decision making over the course of the season, such as how he handled the Youkilis situation and how he talked to Middlebrooks after making an error and told the media about it afterwards)

  • Roberr48

    He is plain Goofy………………

  • acrossalloceans

who the hell cares, he’s gone, everyone has moved onto better things.

  • San Diego Dreamer

We needed Bobby V to show the players why they should appreciate when they have it good. He was the sacrificial bridge to Farrell. He’s not to blame for everybody’s lack of production or losing attitude. They’re supposed to be professionals. Nobody top down acted like it. Much better this year. Hope they all learned, thanks to Bobby V. He did a Helluva job in that respect.

  • Kman1020

To quote Peter Griffin, “Who the hell cares?!!!” Can we just be done with guy already? There has to be more for this guy to write about.

  • Jwing3399

I’m not going to comment on stupid things said by stupid people …. well folks, there in lies the issue. BV, can’t keep his trap closed even when he thinks he is trying to. Thats the kind of attitude that caused him to lose the respect of his players and the coaches.

OK, the team stunk … but BV did nothing but pour gas on a combustible situation

  • jimromeisasass

yeah…………… the quotes (they look like this jackass ( ” “), imply that he really didn’t do a good job managing. sad to have to spell this out for you frikkin’ moron

  • Brad

I hope he does a great job with Sacred Heart, and I hope we never have to hear from him again.

  • Joborsky2002

Hearing Bobby V answer a question is like shaking up the 8 Ball for the answer…..Will the Titanic rise-”Chances look good”…..Did I do a good job coaching the Red Sox? You did a Hell of a job…..

  • Marshallshouse74

    hahahahahahahahaha

  • Srogan12

    Delusional

  • Sinestros’ Slipper Sock

Ah nostalgia..it feels like last year round here again as people take up page after page to type venomous Bobby V comments….I’m not sure what people care more about baseball, or hating someone. Regular baseball stories over the past few years can’t fill three pages with comments and page views..sprinkle in some Bobby V, or maybe some other juicy scandal villians of the past few years like Beckett and voila!  people come out of the woodwork. WEEI knows what they’re doing here and they’ll miss Bobby V. and his polarizing /page viewing / red faced commenting magic..

  • Shennessey

They didn’t lose the greatest closer in the history of the game, they didn’t lose one of the greatest player’s in franchise history in Jeter. the yankees had injuries just like the sox did and they won the east. the sox had injuries and cried about it all year and finished last. You have to have balls to compete and the sox have none

  • Shennessey

Maybe when the sox start playing baseball, people will talk about that again. but when your a last place team and you suck what else in there to talk about

  • http://www.facebook.com/derek.lee.82 Derek Lee

Have you ever listened to this man speak?? He’s the epitomy of a moron.

  • Tchuyoyo

Now Bobby, Bobby….. Lying is a sin here at Sacred Heart. Now do your penance and say: 10 Our Fathers, 25 Hail Mary’s, and 24 Act of Contritions – for telling that whopper to the press. Then go forth and sin no more….

  • Terry Francona

Bobby, u did a terrible job in Boston.

  • SayHey

As a Giants fan, I wish he would go rescue the Dodgers.

  • Jack Chase

Both Wake and Varitek announced their retirements near the beginning of spring training last year.  They were both available.

  • Bielawski82

I’m probably one of the only Boston fans out there that doesn’t put 2012 all on Bobby.  If his team had won over 90 games, all the drama would have been forgotten before season’s end.  It just so happened his team stunk, it’s not his fault and it’s not the players, just bad luck, injuries etc.  Maybe his style of coaching wasn’t the best fit, but he tried and it didn’t work out, it’s just what it is.

  • bbraves

Bobby if you really feel that way good for you , it was a no win for you . But as they said today tell me this is a joke , how can you he sleep at night taking this job form well qualified people . Good luck we will be brining you back to the home at 3 :pm same as usual , and I promise we will stop for ice cream !!!!!!!!

  • Gallaghertj1951

Ever get the feeling that Bobby thinks he is “Speaking in Tongues”. After All, He DOES Think He is Above Everyone Else!

  • Gallaghertj1951

I think he rooms with Marv Albert and they borrow from each other.

He was brought in for change and it happened, lol. It just may turn out that it was for the best,if you take a longer view of it.Farrel in my view is what they need in a manager, but BV in all fairness was cooked by Pedy at the get go.He did’nt have a prayer and he was kind on not saying anything about the franchise. If it were me i would probably let everything hang out.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

If they gave up on Francona then they would have givin up on anyone.I still say that it come’s down to being proffessional, even Pedroia said the same thing. They make a huge trade, jacoby’s down,Ortiz is down, the pitching is gone, and thats Bobby’s fault? If thats the case all you who are picking Boston for 4th or 5th should blame Farrel No?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

Bobby is no punk my friend, tell that to his face Valentine has never been a wusp. His problem is that he mans up and tells to much. The real wusps on the Sox last year were the players.none other.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

Make sure you repeat that for Farrel if they are out of it before the break.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

I can’t understand why BV is demonized, you has alot of cry babys last year and hopefully they are gone.Maybe Pedoia learned a lesson himself and i’m sure he did.Crawford could’nt hack the environement,Gonzo turned out to be a rat,Becket was Becket.Like Bobby said no one could win with that team..

  • BOSOX671

Remember. This was Lucchino’s boy. The baseball genius that he is. Please Larry, go rebuild someone elses stadium.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

Of course he was’nt talking about wins and losses. He was talking about the conditions he inherited from 2012.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

Boston was the most screwed up team in the major’s.The stupid thing that Bobby did was to accept the managers job.He took the blame for a bunch of wusps.Lets hope that the new guys can erase the past.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

Thats just Bobby being Bobby. He took alot of manufactured hits from everyone when the real fault came down to the players. If Connie Mack ever came back to life and try’d to manage the 2012 team he would’nt have survived the season.

  • Enough Said

I’ll tell you why he’s “demonized”, and you don’t really have to look much farther than the quote he gave you in this story.  Yes, the Red Sox ultimately had too many injuries and pitchers under-performing to be successful, but they were already off to a bad start before the injuries started really putting them in a hole.  Maybe one of the most important aspects of managing, managing a clubhouse and all the personalities and drama that goes with that, he failed horribly at.  It seemed like almost every day there was a headline about the drama going on with this team, and Bobby Valentine, rather than helping keep things in-house and quelling these situations, practically poured gasoline on the fire without any second thought.

Like I said before, he handled some situations in a bizarre manner and when giving explanations, would contradict himself constantly.  He called out Youkilis for really no reason and then tried to back away from that situation.  Then when Youk was on the White Sox, he took a not-so-veiled shot at how he was performing.  He embarrassed Middlebrooks in the dugout between innings and needlessly told the media about what he did.  He unnecessarily took a shot at Rays mananger Joe Maddon and sited some made-up article from Sports Illustrated, and then he tried to back away from those comments.  He left this organization on pretty good terms for a short while at the end of the year, but there’s been numerous occasions now where he’s taken shots at several players and the team in general.

Look, I know last year is not all on Valentine, but when you are part of a team, you don’t jump off the ship and watch everyone else go down from afar.  He was part of the problem, whether he likes it or not, and all he should do is take partial responsibility.  That’s what part of being a team is all about, and his comments are a reflection of how there was a disconnect there between him and the players all year long.  He failed to bridge that gap, and that’s on the players just as much as it is on him.

Valentine didn’t do a good job last year, and people got tired of his bizarre behavior pretty quickly.  That doesn’t mean I hate the guy, it just means he simply wasn’t a good fit here.  I wish him well though in his new endeavors.

Bobby V…Still a delusional turd. Good riddance.

  • sjc

    Bobby,

Are you out of your mind?  You SUCKED and you’re a clown!  Good luck to Sacred Heart.

  • Lou

He made some bad mistakes no doubt, but he is taking far too bad a rap for what happened here.

  • Qtrback

    Available for what Jack?

  • Artwikle

The egotist with the perfect thought on himself. I know of no one who agrees with him. He should have stayed as a baseball analyst instead of manager. I hope he allows everyone do there job while he is an AD or is he going to manage them

  • Alphadog9

    Obtuse right to the end

  • Cousin Joey P.

Okay, so the geniuses who love to hate Valantine need to get a life. Your anger is very misguided. The Red Sox hired this guy to do a job and management NEVER backed him. As soon as Kevin Youkilis got his feelings hurt in spring training,  Ben Cherington went rushing to his side with a tissue. Then the team TRADED away it’s best player and David Ortiz threw in the towel when he realized the season was over. I agree with Valentine, NOBODY could have managed that team, especially with an ownership group who never backed you. It’s impossible to manage that way. It’s amazing how many people don’t undertsand the dynamics of what went on here. The owners created this dysfunctionable mess and somehow Valentine is the reason. Who will be to blame when they lose 90 games this year?

  • soxfan

maybe he can re-invent the wrap

  • Mundew1965

your right it wasnt all on Bobby V, the owners are terrible and should have gone away like the “problem players” and second they had the most “injuries ” in the game, because Bobby V was the manager. any other manager and i guarantee the dl wouldnt have looked so bad:P

  • Anonymous

can anyone say “lack of institutional control”?

  • Carl

May we please just have an embargo on any BobbyV “news” from now on?

  • Anonymous

He certainly did a hell of a job. I have no idea why they fired him, I mean 69 wins, who wasn’t impressed?

  • John Cate

He’s right. He sent a 45-year tradition of winning baseball in Boston straight to Hell in just one season.
