John Farrell: Rubby De La Rosa will open 2013 in the minors 03.02.13 at 12:58 am ET

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The stuff is unquestionably major league-caliber.

Rubby De La Rosa showed an electrifying three-pitch mix on Friday against the Pirates, mixing a 94-96 mph fastball with a knee-buckling curve and a nasty, diving changeup at which opposing hitters waved helplessly. It was a three-pitch mix that screamed of top-of-the-rotation potential, the raw materials to be an impact starting pitcher in the big leagues.

The Sox, naturally, are enthused about that possibility. However, there’s a matter of timing regarding the 23-year-old.

After De La Rosa recorded his second straight outing of two scoreless innings (an appearance in which he struck out two and allowed a double), manager John Farrell was asked where De La Rosa will open the 2013 season. His only uncertainty pertained to which minor league level would prove appropriate for the prospect acquired from the Dodgers in last August’s blockbuster trade.

“He’ll be in the minor leagues in some place, whether that’s in Portland or in Pawtucket remains to be seen,” said Farrell. “I think the most important thing is he feels great physically. He’s been a student around [pitching coach Juan Nieves] and [special assistant to the GM Pedro Martinez]. He’s, as we said after the game in st. Louis, he’s a very good-looking young pitcher.”

Asked why De La Rosa couldn’t be a consideration for the major leagues, Farrell suggested that the team’s commitment to his deliberate progression — the Sox are limiting the right-hander to two innings in his spring outings, in deference to the fact that he’s coming off of Tommy John surgery and that he’s never thrown more than 110 innings in a year — and to the long-term view of him as a starter made him a near certainty for the minors.

Because De La Rosa won’t throw more than two innings in any spring outing, the only role in which he’d be considered for the big league roster at the start of the year would be the bullpen. And for now, that’s simply not an avenue that the Sox feel compelled to explore.

“We still want to start him. To put him in the bullpen, given what he’s come through …,” said Farrell, alluding to his surgery. “And our long-term view of him is currently as a starter. That doesn’t mean at some point in the future we wouldn’t look to make the most of the innings he’s gong to give on a given night if the need were to arise here. But our plan is to keep him at two innings through spring training and to build him up once the minor league season begins.”

That, in turn, means that Triple-A Pawtucket — where De La Rosa is almost certain to start the year — will benefit from a glimmering prospect in its rotation. De La Rosa seems likely to make an impact on the big league roster at some point in 2013, but it won’t be in the season’s earliest days.

The term “Can’t Miss” often leads to disaster, but it would appear that he can’t miss.

Looked solid in last night’s game. He does have some great pitches and knows how to use them. While he may be in the minors this year, I would not be surprised if he is called up sometime during the year. And if he does stay in the minors, I do believe it will be only for one year because this guy is a player.

    • anguillaman3

Yup…a few of his pitches were hard to follow on TV…good stuff…he could be real good.

  • Kenkarken

This is a typical Red Sox move, keep you in the minors until you are mid-twenties. No matter what you show it just won’t happen here. If Mike Trout was a Red Sox he’d be in Lowell. They are going nowhere this year let the youth plat instead of giving a stiff like Victorino $13 million a year for 3 years.

I know their all jerks what do they know. Its a good thing for them rather then to allow fans to decide who play’s where. This organization has taken us to 6 post seasons and two WS wins.and i believe they want to get there again. There were bad move’s that contributed to their fall, now it appears that they want to turn back the clock. But it does’nt ussually happen over night.

I agree with your sentiment here.  The Red Sox always take the conservative route by leaving players in the minors a long time.  Sometimes, it really backfires.  Remember Youkilis was in Pawtucket forever?  This pitcher is so good that they’d be stupid to not bring him up soon..  He could pitch a couple of middle innings from the bullpen during the 2013 season — They can have him with the big-league club and still protect his arm!

why do u even bother with the sox, the onlyanswer must be that  u make your self feel better by conplaining

    • Natedizel

Iv got to agree there. If he does good in the minors hopefully is up by July.

    • Fab4ever

You make some good points but then you become a moron with the Mike Trout bit…stop it. If it’s sarcasm, you swung and missed….this kid will get his chance. Just because he impresses in a spring training game against AAA and AA guys, doesn’t mean he’s ready to face Robinson Cano. The Sox and the coaches know more than you do….I trust this kid will get the appropriate amount of reps in Pawtucket and be more ready to pitch in the bigs than he is now. Do you remember Craig Hansen? Rushed up to the bigs far too early and was chum for the remainder of his career before injury and illness took over…

      • On Francona

Francona ruined Hansen as he was always thrown in with impoossible odds. Bases loaded no outs situations and close similiar situations. He was expected to strike out the side. Badly used and managed. Broke his confidence.

        • innovator

I remember alot of 7th inning entrances for Hansen…..If I also remember correctly, hansen was extremely immature…To Hansen’s credit,he was tearing thru the minors…

      • anguillaman3

Right…the issue though is that many posters are really sick of the Sox being a second tier team and the handwriting is on the wall for another piss poor season.  I hope they hang on to some of the Ruby’s they have as their only chance of being good in 3-5 years are these prospects.

    • innovator

Lester was up at 22,Buchholz at 20,Pedroia was up at 22,Iglesias was 22,Papelbon was 23,Ellsbury was 23,Daniel Bard was 23….Kenkarken,would you like to retract your statement?  Just trying to relay the truth….Hopefully I’ve educated the four people that “liked” your post…

    • Shard77

Can’t agree more.  Bradley, Webster, and De La Rosa  will be in the minors so we can enjoy watching Victorino hit .220, John Lackey build up an ERA of 5.00+, and Ortiz sit on the disabled list for half the season.

  • Shome92

He looked impressive last night,,but it was spring training..and.. It was the Pirates!!! Hopefully later in the spring we can see him against a tougher line up. I think he will end up on the opening day roster next year if he continues to progress,,very impressed!!

  • Bielawski82

Too conservative!  If they are worried about innings, let him start in the bullpen.  Every inning this guy pitches in AA or AAA is probably a waste of his arm.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

I agree with Farrel on the pitcher.TJ surgery, the most innings pitched 110,grooming him to start.Send him down and let him get in tune there.A few innings were encouraging but there were only a few.Let Farrel decide i’ll bet he know’s more about young pitchers then we do.

    • innovator

Agreed,Dennis!! Big picture thinking with the organization on Rubby….I’m looking at 2014 for him, hopefully with around 170 effective innings…Lets stretch him this year without overdoing it….135 innings?

      • Fab4ever

Again, excellent observations….what’s the rush? If the kid is simply mowing them down in Pawtucket, fine, he’d be wasting his time there…this city is so quick to judge and should they fail, they can’t get rid of the guy quick enough…

  • Anonymous

Start him in Portland, let him settle in with his new wing and organization, then move him up to Pawtucket after a couple of months. After that, and if a Sox starter goes down, bring him up and see what happens.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BIVLBBG3TCMUJ67DMIXU6N62MI Dick

He has alrady pitch in AAA ands MLB for the Dodgers you idiot.

  • LarryfromNewburyport

I have a problem with Farrell making this decision so soon…..When players go to spring training, they go in the hopes of making the team…. What if De laRosa strikes out the side say in the next 10 appearances?….Does that mean that he isn’t good enough to make the team?
    A typical red sox gaffe…

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1446071508 Pierre Gagne

there is a truism in baseball that says you don’t judge players based on spring training numbers or sept call up numbers because they can be deceiving. therefore it makes no sense to say a pitcher can make the team based solely on spring training numbers.

      • innovator

Which is also why I want to see Jackie Bradley Jr. take a little more time in the minors…I mean,,the guy hit .218 in his last 43 games in AA last year….Give him 30-60 in AA,then evaluate..then move him to AAA for 60 days,,then re-evaluate…patience,patience…the kid will be 23 this year, and I’m sure he will be up in September..

      • LarryfromNewburyport

No….they are there to win a job! thats why they invite non-roster players also….no jobs are guaranteed!….what else can you go by,but spring training numbers….

    • anguillaman3

Good observation…but the kid was probably told that prior to spring training…he’s coming off a serious injury.  They don’t want to rush him or pressure him .

  • San Diego Dreamer

I trust Farrell but I agree with the innovator. He’s old enough to be up, but needs to see how his surgery holds up as they stretch him out. I’d say after the all star break get him some starts in the big league and see if he sticks. You can always shut him down so as not to ruin his arm.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jslegge Joshua Legge

I think he should be playing in Boston from day one, he is a beast.

I don’t know where people get the idea the Red Sox “baby” their prospects.
Will Middlebrooks: 23 at time of debut
Dustin Pedroia: 22 at time of debut
Clay Buchholz: 22 at time of debut
Jacoby Ellsbury: 23 at time of debut
Jon Lester: 22 at time of debut
People cite the Wade Boggs example constantly, but he was 24.

    It’s not accurate.

Bradley, Jr. will probably debut in 2013.
De La Rosa is recovering from Tommy John surgery.

I’d rather they get a little extra time in the minors so they’re completely ready rather than a Craig Hansen 2.0

DeLaRosa has never pitched more than 110 innings in a year. He is fairly new to pitching (converted position player) coming off Tommy John Surgery. He’s being developed as a starter and that means they have to build up his innings. Why? Starters are much more valuable. Studies have shown the folly of increasing the workload of young pitchers (pitchers under age 25) more than 40 innings in a year.
Arguments unsupported by facts and devoid of context are meaningless.

Sox need to be careful with this guy’s arm as he has great potential.  I think the approach outlined by Farrell is the right one – give the kid some time in Portland, see how he does and if solid, move him to Pawtucket.  Under whatever circumstances, however, limit his innings much as the Nats did with Strassburg last year.  One more year of seasoning his stuff, getting to work with Pedro, and strengthening his arm before hitting the majors for good will do him a world of good.  This kid and Webster could have a great impact on Sox pitching prospects for the long haul in another year or two – give them time to mature and learn a bit more.
