Ryan Westmoreland announces retirement from Red Sox 03.06.13 at 2:18 pm ET

Ryan Westmoreland

Red Sox prospect Ryan Westmoreland, who has had two brain surgeries in the last three years, on Wednesday announced that he was retiring from baseball.

Westmoreland had surgery in March 2010 to remove a cavernous malformation from his brain stem. He showed dramatic progress before needing a second surgery last July.

“With a clear mind and heart, as well as the unwavering support and friendship of my family, friends, agent, doctors, therapists and the Boston Red Sox, I have decided to voluntarily retire as a professional baseball player,” Westmoreland wrote in an e-mail sent to members of the media. “Although it is a very difficult decision for me, it has become clear that the neurological damage caused by the most recent cavernous malformation and surgery leaves me with physical challenges that make it impossible to play the game at such a high level.”

Westmoreland, 22, was selected in the fifth round of the 2008 draft out of Rhode Island’s Portsmouth High School. He received a $2 million bonus to sign with the Red Sox instead of playing at Vanderbilt and was considered one of the organization’s top prospects before his medical issues.

In his only minor league season, in 2009 with Single-A Lowell, Westmoreland hit .296/.401/.484/.885 with seven home runs, 35 RBIs and 19 stolen bases in 60 games.

Ryan, I am sure it was with a heavy heart that you decided to retire from baseball. It is without a doubt much more important for you to continue on with therapy and continue to improve your life. I would have loved to watch you come up thru the league and play with the greatest team ever but I would much rather see you continue to make improvements to your health. God bless you and you will always be able to say you where picked to play with the greatest team- not everyone has that honor.. Continued recovery and good health to you Ryan. a RED SOX forever.

  • Lilla Woodhouse

How sad! I’ve been rootIng for Ryan for so long! Hopefully he will find somethIng that fulfills him – maybe around the game of Baseball!!!

  • NormDuBois

Life is too precious. No risk is worth taking that could lead to an ‘unhealthy’ life! Take care!

  • Ty

Wish nothing but the best for this kid.  He’s already accomplished so much.  It would’ve been great to see him play baseball, but there are better things in store for him I’m sure.  He’s an inspiration =)

  • Dewey24

It’s too bad. He seemed like a good one and proves that he is has all the tools to be a top person. I wish him nothing but good things and a long healthy life.

  • Logic

You’re an idiot. He did not get two million in his bank account. 1/3 goes to taxes, 1/10 goes to agents. That alone will drop you close too one million before you even see a dime of it.

  • Bruinman86

I feel bad for the kid, but on the other hand happy that he has his life. His is a story that had a happy ending.  Not many can say that.

  • Xander Bogaerts

Best of luck Ryan. Certainly puts things in perspective.

  • Fab4ever

What a complete zero you are….just an incredibly vapid and idiotic post…this has reached a new low on WEEI…there’s a special place in hell for you….

  • Fab4ever

That’s right….while he lost a baseball career, he can move on with his life and hoepfully without any complications…it’s far more precious than any money he lost….we feel bad for the kid that he got to a certain level and that was stolen from him, but like you said, we’re happy that he can actually make this decision on his own terms….

  • Heronimousb

You are an idiot! Do you really think that this young man wants to trade his passion and love for baseball to go through what he has just so he’ll be “fine for life”. I can only imagine that you are the type of person ho would sue a friend after slipping in their driveway so you would be, “fine for life”.

  • HeronimousB

I can’t believe that there are two idiot’s responding in this way!

How about coaching;or front office beginning work.

  • Classy individual

A good example how fragile life is. Pray his long fight with operations allow him a normal life away from baseball.

  • 1sustainearth

Ryan-I know it was not an easy decision for you to make and as a survivor of neurological surgery I feel the pain it must cause you.  Thank you for your contributions to my favorite team in baseball and may the door that closes on baseball open to a new and beautiful world

  • Everyone

What a shame.  Best of luck to the kid going forward.

I was hoping that this kid was gonna be a future super star! It would of been the ultimate come back story! I wish you nothing but the best in life and I hope you have a long and happy life!

  • Navy1662

Bless you kid, giving up something that you love is hard especially when you have no control over it. I hope you live a full and happy life.

  • Roger

    Dont be an idiot moron

  • Xo45thvols

God Bless him and God help him for the rest of his life.

That’s really too bad. A family member knows him and his family, and has nothing but praise for Ryan. I wish him well.

  • Lfisher34

Ryan you have made portsmouth proud. God bless you. You are a true hero.

  • San Diego Dreamer

May God Bless you with good health and a great life away from baseball.

  • AL34

Sad to see you leave the game, I felt you have had tremendous courage in what you went through and the comeback that you were trying. There is a lot more things in life than baseball and I know that you are going to find one of them and do well. God Bless you Ryan Westmoreland, my prayers are with you for your success in the future.

  • Hindle1976

Good Luck Ryan! Thoughts & Prayers are with you! Life goes on after baseball!!

  • whitey

Really???  He’s fine for life??  The kid has had two MAJOR brain operations, the 1st of which was to save his life!!  The 2nd operation gave him a little better quality of life, but to say he has 2 million, he will be fine is ignorant!!  First of all, the IRS probably got a third of that money, leaving him around 1.2 million.  The kid had his dream of being a pro ball player taken from him, not to mention he may not be able to work for a living going forward. A million dollars isnt what it used to be either, so he is hardly “set for life”.. To those of you that liked this ignorant statement, shame on you!!  Try a little sensitivity training sir!!  This young man has many, many obstacles to overcome just to live a normal life!!

Wow god bless you Ryan and best of luck to everything you do.

  • Izzie Nutz

think his medical bills are less than $1 million for two brain surgeries???

  • Fab4ever

The money isn’t the issue…his comment was a reply to some moron who sits in a dark basement with fur gloves on…his point was understood….read it again in the context that it was written.

  • Cranbrook5

Ryan, you are my thoughts and prayers. As the mom of a brain tumor survivor I know how your life can change. Look for the silver lining in the cloud. Besr wishes.

  • Coolmt02

    QUITTER

  • Coolmt02

He made a city proud because he had a condition that required surgery and made him retire from baseball??

  • BostonRob

These last few posts demonstrate the darkest side of internet communication. That nameless, faceless idiocy in its most pathetic form. I can only image what troubles you so much that you feel the need to draw attention to yourself in such an egregious manner. Maybe you think you are angering people here but all I feel for you is sorrow. Even with Ryan’s obvious challenges, you are apparently in need of some major type of assistance, and, sadly, you don’t even know it. Hope you find it!

  • Llayam

More than 1/3 went to taxes I’d think. He definitely has enough left to get a good start on the rest of his life, although he certainly isn’t in the position of never having to take a job. Doesn’t seem like the type who’d want to go that route anyway.

  • Coolmt02

    God bless you BostonRob

  • Joncouillard

    Wishing him all the best!

  • whitey

Boy you must thrive on making an arse of yourself huh??  You made three posts, and they are all moronic statements!!!  Get a life jagoff!!!
