Carl Crawford: Boston media ‘worst thing I’ve ever experienced in my life’ 03.07.13 at 1:49 pm ET
By Jerry Spar

Dodgers outfielder Carl Crawford offered another reminder Thursday of how miserable he was during his time in Boston. (AP)

Carl Crawford continues to struggle to get on the field with the Dodgers, while continuing to complain about his experience with his former team. On Thursday, he took some shots at the Boston media.

“That smile turned upside down quick,” Crawford told Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com of his time in Boston. “I think they want to see that in Boston. They love it when you’re miserable.

“Burying people in the media, they think that makes a person play better. That media was the worst thing I’ve ever experienced in my life.”

Crawford, traded to Los Angeles last August, said he’s still hoping to play Opening Day, but he’s still limited as he recovers from Tommy John surgery last season.

Meanwhile, talking about his time in Boston, he said that he realizes signing with the Red Sox was a mistake.

“It just wasn’t the right place for me at the end of my day,” he said. “I didn’t do my homework. Maybe they didn’t, either.

“At the end of the day, it just wasn’t the place for me.”

Crawford’s numbers took a dramatic decline during his injury-plagued 1½ seasons in Boston, but he’s convinced he can bounce back now that he has “that free-spirit feel” he used to have when he played for the Rays.

“I feel like I’ve got a lot of baseball left,” he said. “But over there [in Boston] I felt like my career was almost over.”

Crawford acknowledged that his performance was worthy of criticism in Boston.

“I get it, I didn’t perform,” he said. “I got the money. I didn’t perform. I gave them every reason.”

That said, he complained that the criticism was too much.

“I took so much of a beating in Boston, I don’t think anything could bother me anymore,” he said. “They can say what they want — that I’m the worst free agent ever — and it won’t get to me. But it bothered me the whole time there.

“Look how they treat [John] Lackey. Adrian [Gonzalez] hit 30 home runs [actually 27], and they talked about him not hitting home runs.”

    I hate this bum.

Frigging whiny ars multi-millionaire spoiled brat!!  What did you expect after signing that contract and not producing??

  • Chonor0713

Carl Crawford is quite a piece of work.  All ready pulling the same crap in LA.  Guy doesn’t want to play because he knows he sucks and he might get booed by the fans and it will hurt his feelings.  BOOO HOOO HOO.  Piece of crap waste of talent.

  • Dpalm789

as much as i hated carl crawford, hes dead on with this, the boston media is rough, but you dont gotta cry and complain about it, ur 3000 miles away, just play ball

  • Natedizel

Ya sorry we didn’t do out homework Crawford. Sorry we didn’t realize you actually cant in a real baseball town.

“I took so much of a beating in Boston, I don’t think anything could
bother me anymore,” he said. “They can say what they want — that I’m the
worst free agent ever — and it won’t get to me. But it bothered me the
    whole time there.

It still does bother you thats why your still talking about it. Grow a set crawford.

  • Saga

The media wasn’t as hard on him as they should have been. Lucky for him (although he doesn’t realize it) the rest of the team sucked as well and provided just as easy of a target so the media didn’t really focus on him as much as they would have in the past. I think this guy just needs to shut up, count his cash and sleep well knowing he is getting paid millions of dollars for doing absolutely nothing.

  • Frank

See this is what I can’t stand about these athletes they can’t leave a team peacefully without talking junk. Carl, I was one that stood by u while u were going thru your struggles and now your on another team and now your talking smack ? How disappointing. U showing your true colors.

  • Srogan12

Guy got over 100 million… that’s all the homework he did… produced nothing… always hurt i see his mouth is working fine. When the mouth works and the brain doesn’t people say stupid things like this overpaid underproducing potatohead

  • Boston Media

Boston Media: Carl Crawford, worst thing ever.

  • Guest

What exactly did Theo find out about his personality when they were stocking him that made him think he would work here? Theo took such pride in that narrative. Until it went to hell and he bailed and then said it was a “marketing decision” to sign him. Fraud.

  • Jake

I am not a Crawford fan but nothing he said is untrue or unfair. Boston fans and media whine and complain like nowhere else.

  • Mole

i totally agree…the boston media is the worst.   and they make a living with it?   rumors, false stories.

  • omgthebruinssomgggg

say what you want about his stay here, but he’s right on about boston sports media.

  • Mole

the people commenting, are weei employees and boston media meida members….

  • Edik

    Lackey sucks

  • Devan

People have been saying for years this kind of stuff about the Boston media and Boston fan base. And yet people have still had successful careers and teams have won championships. That tells me that the problem is not with the media but with the player. Crawford is a nice player when there is ZERO pressure (like the 8,000 average fans at a Rays game) but didn’t have the stones for a real baseball market. Good riddance.

  • Guest711

You should really do something LA before you bash Boston. You cant bash media that said you did nothing when you current are doing nothing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Paul-Crowley/100001398780186 Paul Crowley

NO…they like it when you stay healthy and can ACTUALLY play. Stop whining Carl; and start earning your money.

  • Bobby V

Carl,  you were the  ‘worst thing I’ve ever experienced in my life’.

  • Blow Me

He was right about one thing. The Sox didn’t do their homework.

  • Dewey24

Who’s Carl Crawford? The guy that used to be good for the Rays? I remember him, damages easily, not enough sack to handle it here. He’s a perfect fit in la la land where the rest of the overpaid pu$$ies are!

  • Anonymous

Yes the media in Boston can be brutal, but Crawfords’s treatment was nothing in comparison to daily beating dished out to Jim Rice and /or Mike Greenwell back in the day. My advice to Carl, stay away from NY, Philly and the ChiSox as well if you want people to not care what you do for your $142 mil.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1077097349 Paul Savini

Shut up and try to play!

  • RDee

OK, Carl……………………….prove us wrong! Stop complaining and prove us wrong. You took the money and ran.

  • CrawfordFan

I bet he loved the media before he played a game here and they were all writing fluff pieces about his workout routine.

  • John Marzano

Boston Media is a disgrace. He is right. You can’t dispute that obvious fact.

  • Shecka50

Gee Carl if you only played in a few games while you were here. Wait a minute, you did.!!!!!!

  • Troll Hunter

Shut up new York troll/loser. How them Yankees looking dick?

  • spike4

    Boston media
and fans are tough. Nothing new there. But, in general, teams that play in
cities that pay attention to their teams typically are. Philly, New York,
Chicago, et cetera have touch fans and media.

    In regards
to Carl’ comments, he was treated pretty well, overall, and seemed to be
removed from intense focus guys like Lacky, Beckett, and AGon received. He took
some criticism; as well he should have, for underperforming when he
    played…which was pretty infrequently.

    That team he
was part of was a historical bust with an overwhelming collection of a-holes.
What did he expect would happen? The team was horrible, no one on the team
seemed to care, the media, though brutal, ended up being correct on players
like Beckett and AGon (Who showed complete indifference) and the team as a
    whole.

What Carl seems to be missing here is that the team got
smoked by the media and fans b/c they deserved to get ripped by the media and
    fans. They sucked!

  • Roger

    especially that turd Gordon Edes

  • Jberg12

Just shut your mouth Crawford you whiny f___ing c__t.  We never really wanted you in Boston in the first place.  You are obviously waaaaaayyyyy too sensitive to have anyone ask you anything if it isn’t all nice, easy questions.  You have always been over rated.  My sisters both have better arms than you, and you can’t hit for s__t.  Loser.

  • jlips4

I think the Boston media was good to him when a “fan” threw a racial slur at him on rehab assignment at Double A Portland. The media pretty much went to bat for him…(since he would’ve whiffed anyway). I hope he gets traded to the Philly media & fan base.

  • Newhip52

old catchers never die -you got a bum rap

  • Bill

As much as I can’t stand Crawford, the media people around here are d-bags.

  • Anonymous

Say what you want about Crawford but you have to acknowledge there’s a lot of truth to what he says here.  All members of the Boston sports media may not be as bad as he says, but there are far too many who really are vile, obnoxious, and much more focused on their own agendas than they are on serving their audience well and reporting fairly on the teams and individuals they cover.

  • Kman1020

Does he really think it is going to be any different in a market like L.A. where if you don’t perform the media and fans won’t get on you? Why didn’t you stay in Tampa if you are so sensitive pal.

  • Combat Wombat

Headline- Carl Crawford: Still Traumatized After Seeing People In the Stands
    April, 2011

Boston- Carl Crawford was found trembling in the fetal position by a clubhouse attendant immediately after the Sox home opener. The attendant was drawn to the shell of the former Tampa Bay All-Star, who through choked sobs repeatedly cried, ”the cameras… people… I feel so dirty. Why so many people…admission… charged…concessions…sold”.

When questioned about Crawford’s whereabouts during the teams’s press conference, Tito was interrupted by Adrian Gonzalez, who proclaimed God did not will for that question to be asked. The press in attendance was further confused as Gonzalez proceded to declare himself a Papal candidate and showered Nick Cafardo with Holy Water (as he put it), or, according to Gammons’ notepad, a half-consumed bottle of blue Gatorade.

What’s the matter Carl, you still have some sand in your vag?

  • Dano50

Never mind that this clown is THE worst 142 million dollar player alive…he has got to be the stupidest pro athlete alive without doubt.  What on earth would you expect after signing that deal?  I’m guessing even the laid back LA fans and media aren’t going to be any bargain either if this trend continues with him.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

That statement Crawford made sounded stupid. He says they did’nt do their home work either. They syre as hell did’nt,they would have realized that as far as baseball is concerned in Boston he turned out to be a bum period.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

Media or no media,Crawford is a wusp.

  • Dano50

And you know this HOW exactly?  Have you lived in other towns?  The only place it’s any different are cities where the fans don’t care…don’t watch…don’t buy tickets.

  • MOLLY

TOO SENSITIVE A GUY AND WE ARE GLAD U R GONE CARL. GOOD LUCK IN LA IF U EVER GET BACK ON THE FIELD. U THROW LIKE A GIRL AND RUN LIKE U HAVE SOMETHING STUCK UP U KNOW WHERE

  • Jack Chase

He is absolutely right about a large portion of the Boston sports media.  In my lifetime, at least, Boston has always had some of the absolutely worst sportswriters in the business.  I remember how they treated Ted Williams, Jimmy Piersall and Jackie Jensen.  Aspiring sports media types grew up thinking writing trash was the way things should be done.  With some of them, it seems like they are taking out their ire on the athletes because of their own lack of athletic ability.  Heck, some of them could not walk around the bases without having to stop to catch their breath!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

All Boston ask for is players who get 140 million to do their jobs.Yankee fans demand it as well.Crawford would be the same in any big market.

  • Crawfish crying with $$$$$$

You and your best buddy David can work out together and project lineup dates. At least David could take the
pressure. Agree on press because TED never wanted the press to know that he visited the hospitals. However the NY press is equal os worse.

  • Ty

This is absolutely ridiculous.  I don’t care if what he said about the Boston media is true, why is he STILL talking about this?  He has commented on this numerous times, and I’ve about had enough. What happened first, Carl Crawford struggling or the Boston media “beating him up”? From what I remember, the guy did not start off well, and that’s when the bashing started.  Some certainly questioned the money the Sox were paying him, but any reasonable person had no idea his performance in Boston would be as bad as it was.  Once he got off to a bad start, he only put more pressure on himself, and even Crawford has admitted that he put too much pressure on himself to live up to his contract.  He swung at so many pitches in the dirt, down and in, it was like he forgot how to hit. His experience might have been a bad one, but don’t blame it on the media, CC.  You only have yourself to blame.  Time to accept responsibility.

  • P_nazzaro

Thank God they pulled off that trade late last year. I can’t believe this guy.

  • Fab4ever

He got a whole ton of money to play in this town…if he thought it was gonna be a cakewalk, he was delusional at best….shut up Carl…..it’s a weak argument….there’s been a whole lotta other athletes who got paid and played well here and in other media-tough cities like NYC and Philly….nobody got pasted worse than JD Drew and you never heard him complain…..good riddance.

  • Fab4ever

You continue to subscribe to being a moron…..you’re either really dumb, delusional or at best, revisionist…like NYC, Philly and Chicago are a walk in the park….your posts might be the silliest of anyone who’s ever posted…you’re up there with Shennesey, Spygate, Tito, Krusty…..you’re in good company. The Court of Boneheads!

  • Rych603

Boo freaking whoo… I will deal with it at my job that pays quite a bit less. Cry baby

  • Fab4ever

Nice try….how many ID’s you packing now?

i can fully  understand how this affected his mental approach with in turn affected his phyiscal approach

  • John Marzano

I’m a Red Sox fan born and raised in Medford. Not a New Yorker, not even close to a New Yorker.
Boston media is terrible. Boston is awesome, I am a Red Sox fan, I love Boston, I love the Red Sox. But the media is deplorable.

  • John Marzano

why are you sticking up for the media? what does that have to do with the red sox or the people of boston? what are you, a media fan?

  • Crawfish crying with $$$$$$

You were the worse player ever for the Sox. Big bucks very low return and a lot of excuses.

  • fromtheshire

    No **** Sherlock!

  • Anonymous

Until he came to Boston, Crawford hit for average, stole bags, but had no power to speak of.  The contract Theo gave him was a farce. He wasn’t worth 2/3′s of it.

  • Anonymous

Poor little Carl, he should have just taken the money and run.
Piece of trash, he will fit in perfectly in L.A.

  • Navy1662

That sounds pretty accurate. The media here is really ridiculous.

  • Wmeritz

These media guys are one level below pond scum.

  • San Diego Dreamer

It’s simple, we expect you to perform up to the level you were compensated. I didn’t see anybody turning back money because you didn’t earn it. You’re right it was a mistake and John Henry was the guy who paid for it.

  • OY

Yep, poowah wittle Cawl. Don’t think he had a hard time cashing his checks.  He should grow up and get on with his life..and get on the field for starters..

  • Wmeritz

I could not agree with you more! I for one did not shed a tear when Dick Young of the NY Daily News passed on!

  • Wmeritz

Crawford brought this upon himself. If only he could keep his big mouth shut.

  • commenter

    hes still a monday..

  • Icebe23

He came as advertised; mentally weak. We almost paid 145 million for this..good luck with that LA!!

  • Linda Austin

By and large the Boston media went EASY on Carl Crawford because he had legit injuries.
The occasional radio talk host may have been very critical but Carl Crawford was NOT abused by the Boston media and I’m as big a critic of that media as anyone.
What a whiney loser this guy is.
    Thank God he is gone.

  • Chrisgator

Look, I will be the first to admit it, I loved this signing when it happened. CC was/is the type of player we never sign, then goes to another team and you are like dang, why didnt we pony up a bit more (tex, arod, etc). But after he came to town and then all the crap started, I remember thinking to myself certain guys are made for a city and certain guys are not. Perhaps he is not. But I was still a believer. But the product on the field, for which one is ultimately judged by in any sport, was horrible. I mean in key situations when he was actually playing he would come up and I would scream bunt because that might of had a better chance of success than him actually swinging. So in the end, both sides screwed it up, write it off as a colossal failure, let him go get the rest of his pay in LA, and let them enjoy the cc experience.

  • irishknight

heres a question did he bring this up on his own or was it ‘ the media’ talking about it again and again and again like the chicken and beer if a player is asked a question he will answer it i would imagine we have heard only part of that and other interviews that so called writers want us to read so they can get a reaction!!!

  • Franz JosephonBergs

Once the boos start cascading down in LA, I wonder who he’ll blame. Just kidding. It’ll still be Fleger’s fault, I’m sure.

  • L Underwood

he’s a crybaby he didnt play enough or at all for that matter thats why he wasnt liked and when he did mangae to play he looked so uncomfortable like he was going to burst into tears at any moment he was intimadated by boston the end admit it

  • Elaine_Apthorp

Oh, Carl. You really don’t do yourself a lot of good saying this sorta thing. Best to take the high road. Always works out better in the long run. When you whine about the media it just makes you look like a weak person, and besides, those folks–you know, the media?–they have tape recorders and they write and broadcast commentary for a living. Guess what they’ll make sure fans hear about you?

  • Jwing3399

i dont know Carl…..maybe folks got on Adrian after 2011 because he hit a combined .159 in 132 ABs vs the two teams in their division that finished ahead of them and made the playoffs…. or maybe because he only hit 10 hrs after June…. maybe there were a few frustrated people because he never made it more than seven feet down the line when he hit a ground ball … of course, that’s basically what you did, too ….so maybe you think thats the kind of effort that wins over people when you’re making 20 mil plus a year

  • sukwinderpasswinder

Carla Crawdaddy, worst signing ever (except Lackey).

  • sukwinderpasswinder

    Carla has issues

  • sukwinder

    After Lackey.

  • sukwinder

Before Carla showed how much he sucked the Boston media hyped the loser like no tomorrow.

  • Uncle Buck

Agreed, good points and well stated. I suspect he has remorse mixed with guilt over his choice to come here for the money and all that came with it.  Poor choice on his part in hindsight, but the best thing to do is zip it and silence his critics, which from reading these posts, are numerous.  I don’t hate the guy.  Why would I.  It was a failed gamble by the Red Sox and it is over.  Most of us have moved on, he should just let it rest.

  • Uncle Buck

What a shame there is not a pesticide to exterminate internet trolls.  Pests everywhere and irritating as hell.

  • Fab4ever

No…who gives a crap that the media is tough? The guy is making more money than Solomon. Just suck it up and play ball….that’s my point. If he doesn’t/didn’t like it, give the Sox back the money he stole from them for sucking while he was here…..

You spoiled man.Blame how you performed on the press. Well Carl who are you going to blame now when you don’t hit or play for the money you were givin. Good bye and don’t let the door hit you on the way out. We care were thrilled to have you join the Red Sox but you spit in our face. Good bye baby I can send you a few box of tissues

Noone disliked Gonzalez Carl. We didn’t like YOU. The Sox let a good player like Gonzalez go to help get rid of your miserable overpriced butt.

“Burying people in the media”… the only person who buried  you here, was you.

  • Prunes

I have to agree with Crawford. The media in this town is comprised of classic, liberal know-it-alls who like all liberals, live to destroy successful people. That said, Crawford was a bust and perhaps is the one signing that best defines the demise of the Sox.

  • Anonymous

He is right.  Take Callahan for example.  He has been trying to write off Ortiz for the last 4 years.  And how about the distain for Bellicheck?  Two above average performers yet years of negativity on both…pathetic but common.

  • fossil

Dude – the Boston media overhyped Carla relentlessly until he showed he couldn’t cut it in Boston, then they called it like it was. All of them liberal, conservative and tea party.

  • Willco44

Adios and good riddance to the WORST FA signing EVAH in Red Sox history!

  • Bielawski82

It’s not his fault, who on these comments wouldn’t take the money if someone wanted to overpay you?  I didn’t think so… It’s Theo’s fault.  Even with the Ray’s, he was an average player who could steal bases.  Big deal!  Red Sox management need to go watch Money Ball again.

  • Jrtruth

not a crawford fan either, but he is right. the boston media both paper and electronic, are terrible.they not only shill for the home teams but they stooge for the front offices and ownership. they only go after players  if its in keeping with the management line.as long as the sox were winning they looked the other way when manny, ortiz and others juiced.if you listen to their sports talk you’d think that the pats won the super bowl every year. not a peep about bill’s media behavior, or cheating on his wife.all the media outlets look the other way as they collect rights fees and ad dollars from the teams. not to mention the cozy relationship with so-call journalists doing pr friendly books with these clowns.

  • Dee-fense, dee-fense!

See the ball, hit the ball – - pretty simple.  The guy maybe needs to go to a small market.  You want to make big time money as a sports pro the media is going to be part of it.  Boston media IS tough – but there are plenty of guys who thrive.  Win, hustle, produce and it all changes.

  • Dee-fense, dee-fense!

Above average? You think? Don’t go out on a limb or anything.

  • Spence

Let’s see here.  You were in the same division as the Sox for years.  You took $142 million for the scrutiny that comes with playing for one of the premier teams in baseball.  You then stink up the joint and cry when everyone in the media doesn’t hold your hand and say “there there Carl, we know you’re trying”??!  Give me a break.  And oh yeah, fix that stupid stance of your,s you whiney primadonna!

  • Chazcoe21

IM SO SICK OF THE GUYS WE GOT RID OF CAUSE THEY CANT HANG IN BOSTON WINNING ATMOSPHERE CRY LIKE LITTLE TODDLERS, GET OVER IT, YOU BEEN GONE STOP TALKING ABOUT IT, THEY KEEP BRINGING UP HOW BAD THERE TIME WAS, BECAUSE DEEP DOWN, THEY JUST COULDNT PERFORM AFTER WE GAVE THEM 2 YEARS AND NOW WHEN THEY DONT PERFORM IN LA, THEY GONNA BLAME THE MEDIA THERE ALSO. COME ON GUYS, FACE IT, YOU COULDNT PERFORM SO YOU GOT DUMPED. THIS ISNT TAMPA BAY (UNTIL 2008 WHEN THEY GOT GOOD) WERE NOT GONNA KEEP TERRBILE PERFORMERS YEAR AFTER YEAR TO LET THEM TRY TO FIGURE IT OUT, NO IN BOSTON EVERYONE IS REPLACEABLE, THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF MLB PLAYERS WAITING TO TAKE YOUR SPOT TO PLAY WITH THIS HISTORIC TEAM.  SO STOP BIT*HING CRAWFORD!

  • Bill

Carl Crawful is the dumbest, laziest crybaby who ever called himself an athlete. He is a disgrace.

  • quit complaining

he’s right… the media is horrid here… they are always driving players out before they get a chance… although crawford did little to help his case

  • Jfaust1954

Who cares! He’s a soft loser, still a bum and damaged goods, and the best thing we did was unload him on a west coast team. The fact that it was an LA team just makes it all that much sweeter.

  • Allan in Millis

$157,088.00 per each base reached over two broken down seasons.

  • Anonymous

Funny how people can dish it out but can’t take it. He never dogged it that I saw. Probably tried too hard. In the end he wasn’t  cut out for Boston, so shame on the Sox for not doing their homework. I love how thin skinned the media here is when they get criticized though. what a bunch of hypocrites.
