Drake Britton on arrest: ‘I’m extremely remorseful’ 03.08.13 at 1:45 pm ET

Drake Britton

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Red Sox left-hander Drake Britton, who was arrested over the weekend on charges of driving under the influence, expressed regret that the matter is one with which the team must now deal, but he declined further comment on the matter.

“I’m extremely remorseful,” Britton, who was optioned from big league camp to Double-A on Sunday, said of the arrest. “It’s an internal matter that’s going on right now. I’m sorry for the negativity that I brought, but that’s about all I can say right now. I’d really rather not say anything else.”

Britton allowed three runs on five hits and four walks while striking out one in 3 1/3 Grapefruit League innings. Still, his stuff had been impressing members of the big league coaching staff, building on a strong 2012 season in which he finished the year with a 3.72 ERA with 16 starts with Double-A Portland with 76 strikeouts and 38 walks in 84 2/3 innings.

    Clown could’ve killed someone.

  • Natedizel

What this kid did was stupid. He could’ve killed himself or someone else but everyone deserves a second chance…. Hopefully he learns from this

  • Bruinman86

Hopefully he learned something from it.  If he wants to race, go to an airstrip.

Moron. This isn’t the last we will hear of this guy.

  • Donalmcl27

Extremely DUMB is correct wording.  We all dream of an opportunity like that, and he blows it.

People make dumb stupid decisions when they are young.  Yes he deserves the consequences, but let us give him the chance to learn from his mistakes and redeem himself as well.   Don’t act like your **** don’t stink and you never made a poor decision in your life.

Everyone writing these post acting like they have never made a mistake are the true idiots. Give the kid a chance let him
Learn from this. Being a critic and trying to demoralize him will do nothing but cause more outrageous media attention.

There are degrees of mistakes here fellas.  I..and i’m sure a lot of you have been behind the wheel of a car after a few beers and not been technically legal to drive. I’ll tell you that i have never driven my car at 111 mph period.  Never mind being so blown out that I handed an officer my debit card instead of my license. Fact of the matter is he’s lucky to be alive. Hopefully he remembers that next time he wants to get smashed.

111 mph fleeing the police on a busy road, as I understand it.  Even drunk, he should have better judgement than that.

  • Rmmm

I got one in 1999 when I was dumb and 18 years old. Never drank on ounce and drove since. Lesson learned.

Excuse me, but in whose book does 3 runs, 5 hits, and four walks in 3 and 1/3 innings equal “impressive stuff”???  Not in mine and hopefully not in Red Sox management’s either.  This kid may have potential, but he did not show it in his Grapefruit League innings.  He needs two things: more time at Portland and a good stern talking to.

  • Uncle Buck

Agreed.  I said earlier in the week, that takes stupid to another level.  With his many bad choices that night, it appears the kid has a wiring defect.  Hopefully they can get him squared away so he can enjoy his life whether he plays baseball or not.

  • Spitfire1064

He’s just remorseful he caught i bet.

  • DR_DREW_IS_A_BITCH

People calling him an idiot really have no idea what they are talking about.  This kind of drinking and reckless behavior is indicative of some real problems.  This sort of impulsivity suggests both addiction and mental health issues.  The team should not mess around.  Tell the kid to take a month away from baseball and send him to intensive treatment.  If he responds well and takes it seriously, you let him come back to the organization.  They invest a lot of money into these kids; they need to take responsibility for their employee and see that he gets immediate treatment.
