David Ortiz says he’s going to be ready when he’s ready, and not before 03.18.13 at 1:46 pm ET

FORT MYERS, Fla. — David Ortiz did not hit Monday, as was originally planned, instead just continuing to participate in the treatment program implemented to help alleviate the inflammation in his right heel.

“I’m not going to do things until I feel it’s the right thing to do,” he said. “I’m feeling better, though.”

Ortiz said there is no timetable for when he will begin baseball activities, pointing to the lessons learned when suffering what he identified as two setbacks. The first came, he said, when playing in the one game in August, and the other being his latest step back in spring training.

“I haven’t been able to play and do what I’m supposed to do. It’s not fun,” he said, standing in soaking wet clothes after having run in the pool. “Just trying to deal with it. The setback is what pretty much frustrates me the most because you think you’re doing the right thing to get better. It’s like walking backwards. That’s the part of this game I don’t like. We’re approaching it different and hopefully we get to the point we don’t have to worry about it anymore.

“That’s the one thing I’m trying to avoid, just coming back and not being able to stay in the lineup the way everybody expects me to be. That’s why I’m going to approach it depending on how I feel. I’m going to try and be smart about it because when I go back in … Setbacks are very frustrating, and I’ve always had one. I’ve had two, by the way. The one time I tried to get back in August and this one now in spring training. It’s not fun.”

Regarding returning on Aug. 14 of last season, Ortiz said he didn’t regret coming back for the game, but admit that the appearance led to pain he hadn’t felt since originally injuring the Achilles a month before.

The good news, according to Ortiz, continues to be the health of his right Achilles, which was confirmed by his most recent MRI.

“The pain I used to feel is not there anymore,” he explained. “The MRI talked about it. You can see the difference between the one I had at the beginning when I first got injured and the one I have now. It seems like somebody wants to give me a new Achilles. That’s what it seems like. It’s dark, very nice.”

Asked if it seemed like an odd spring training, having not played in a game, Ortiz responded, “Seems like it. This is something time and doing the right thing it will be fine. Like you guys know, we had that MRI and the only thing going on down there is the inflammation. My Achilles is fine. Nothing else you have to worry about. But inflammation causes you pain. Just waiting for the inflammation to go away and we’ll be good to go.”

Ortiz has been so isolated due to treatment, he said he hasn’t even gotten a good look at one of the camp’s stars thus far, Jackie Bradley Jr. When asked if he thought the outfielder should make the team, the DH asked what Bradley Jr. was hitting. When told close to .500, Ortiz seemed to make up his mind.

“Oh yeah. If he’s hitting .500, yes,” he said. “I heard he’s a really good player. I haven’t been able to really watch him because they keep me indoors doing a whole bunch of things. I heard he has skills. Never know.”

Asked what he was doing at Bradley Jr.’s age (22), Ortiz said, “Hitting bombs in the big leagues.”

His primary intention is to get paid. After that, whatever happens or doesn’t happen is no big deal…

  • Xander Bogaerts

Isn’t there a clause in the contract stating if it is not the achillies injury he gets the full 30 million? No wonder he keeps saying in every interview it is not the achillies . Perhaps 4 million reasons.

What a fraud this guy is. He got his money and is laughing all the way to the bank. The guy can’t even run on the treadmill and has a sore “heal”. What an albatross contract when they just should of played hardball with the guy & gave him a 1 yr deal that has worked the past few years.

  • Xander Bogaerts

Who will be back first? David Krejci who took a hundred mile an hour slapshot to the knee or David Ortiz who has a “sore heal”? My money is on Krejci.

  • David Ortiz’ Achilles

Worst signing of the offseason. It’s time to move on.

  • Jack

The deal to get rid of Crawford, Gonzalez, and Beckett was a stroke of genius (or stupidity by the Dodgers) only to be partially offset by stupidly signing “Big Juicer” to a TWO year contract. They should have offered him one year at $5 million, subject to a physical exam. Just let him go back to the DR and write the money off to experience.

  • Chris

You people are ridiculous. Yes, it’s frustrating that he’s not playing yet, but the contract is NOTHING. Two years at any dollar amount does not hamstring a team with the resources this one has. Oh, and when he is in the lineup he’s a top 5 hitter in the AL. It’s not like he’s out there hitting .210 with no power.

    will the dodgers take ortiz

This bum is going to leave Boston on a bad note.Everything he did in the past is going to go down the tube. But then the owners deserve it they allowed him to steal 26 million.I hope that he is through kaput. Its time to replace him permanately. The FO should forget the extra year of ownership and start Bradley in the outfield.Just tell Ortiz to take as long as he wants hop a plane and recuperate in the republic.

One of the worse if not the worse in all of baseball.I’m telling you that this guy knew before he signed.Dump the crook now and cut their losses.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

You don’t get it Chis, this guy stole 26 million and if you believe he did’nt know it i have a bridge in Brooklyn you can have cheap. No offence i just hate theives, but then the owners deserve to get clipped.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

Its a gaurranty contract, otherwise you can bet that the media would have been all over it by now.

  • http://profiles.google.com/nikcomp Tony Nicholas

Guys lets not blame Ortiz on this. Schilling did the same thing essentially. If management is dumb enough to sign a player that is hurt then they get what they deserve. Its Boston’s Dr’s that know David’s condition and if they signed him knowing what they knew about the heels/knees/etc etc then who’s at at fault? David really needs to be healthy at the end not the beginning. We have a habit of starting fast and fading even faster. Better to make sure players are healthy by June on then right now.

  • Xander Bogaerts

From what I heard it is 26 million over 2 years. If he doesn’t have an “achillies related” injury which causes him to miss 20 games or more it gets boosted up to 30 million over 2 yrs. Hence, the reason in every interview he states “it is not related to the achillies.” I wouldn’t hold my breath on any Redsox beat writer getting to the bottom of anything which will reflect negatively on one of their media darlings.

I called Ortiz a criminal so it did’nt get posted.

  • pahpy22

Play Bradley full time in left or right field, have Gomes DH and tell David to take a ride in a wheel chair somewhere/anywhere until he believes he is ready. And, oh, by the way, stop all coverage of this guy – I think we are all sick and tired of hearing about his injury.

Ortiz’ signing was little more than a PR move, and a big mistake.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

Tony,if you see a bundle of money outside a bank with the banks name on it do you keep it? It is Ortiz’s fault and some things are not seen on xray.Sure they knew he had a problem but it was Ortiz who really knew the extant of the injury. He made everyone feel including the FO that he would be hot to trot until he signed his name to the contract. He’s a dishonest guy and thats the bottom line.I don’t know about you but i don’t condone that garbage. He isn’t broke the guys a millionare and he stole an extra 26 mil to boot.

Well that’s takes a load off of my mind! I was worried Ortiz was going into the season intending to get injured, and we all know an ounce of intention is worth a pound of prevention. This should solve all of our injury problems! Listen everyone stop making it your “intention” to get injured! ..problem solved. The power of magical thinking to prevent injuries. He’s .babbling meaningless nonsense..it’s total puff of a statement.

  • give him time

He has played in a lot of games(which prob meant playing through nagging injuries) and he has carried this offense for a long time. Ortiz has also proved many people wrong by continuing to produce at a high level(usually the best DH and top 5 hitter in AL every year) despite his age, which can prob be attributed to hard work in the offseason. He has also felt underpaid at times($$$ thrown around at less talented players, i.e. Victorino) by not receiving the contract he felt he deserved by being the best at his position….still came to play despite the 1 or 2 year deals that don’t offer much security(relative to athlete’s salary these days) incase he became injured. Ortiz seems to love the game and always wants to play, so I don’t understand what his motivation would be to sit out this year after receiving a contract that he appeared happy with. When he struggled for stretches of those two years, the media/fans were killing him, and yet he continued to fight and raise his game when it would have been easier to make up an injury. He also came to camp last year in great shape(hard to do that now when you can’t run) despite a manager that nobody wanted to play for. He’s also shown loyalty when he could have signed elsewhere for at least the same(after feeling under appreciated and low balled(Welker/Allen) Some would also argue that being clutch is an aspect of “heart”, as he was able to step up his game even more when the team really needed him because he just wanted it more. This is one of those injuries that takes a long time to heel, as it is in a place that get little blood flow, as well as the fact that he has to walk on it. He’s a big dude, and although not as big as Shaq, I’m pretty sure Shaq wanted to get that 5th ring with Boston, but after several months of rest, he played for a couple min, while looking like he had been shot in the leg.

  • ….

my same comment to somebody saying he had no heart, but I figured since I wrote so much and there’s a lot of negativity towards Ortiz, I mine as well post it here as well.

  • dave in nh

it may be no fun hanging around here not playing, but its lots of fund spending that $26mil thanks liverpool fc for the golden parachute!

  • dave in nh

only if we give them lackey too!

  • cmrdx

stop hating on Ortiz. Everyone wants him to be ready opening day so he can hurt the heel again? Let the dudes achilles heal so he can stay on the field

  • yazfan

There are a lot of issues at play here. One is how bad Red Sox players (and this ownership group) looks when compared to the other sports teams in this town. Red Sox ownership should stop from making promises (“5 to 7 days”) to fans, because it comes across as though they’re trying to dangle the carrot in front of the fans–who don’t appreciate it. Another issue is that Ortiz is going to be plagued by this for a long time. He was injured LAST JULY. Eight months have passed, and still he can’t even take batting practice, let alone run.
Third, Ortiz should (but surely won’t) keep his mouth shut. His ego is huge–and it’s not helping matters. He should take a step back and realize that all he’s being asked to do is swing a bat, four times a game. Nobody’s asking him to field, run, or throw. And after eight months, he still can’t even do that. So please, just do your pool running and get your feet massaged and cash your huge paycheck…and shut up already.
