Yankees GM Brian Cashman hints team is out of market for Stephen Drew

Still thinking Stephen Drew might wind up in pinstripes before the season starts?

After agreeing on Wednesday to fork over a reported $155 million over seven years for Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, Yankees GM Brian Cashman said the team likely will have a cheaper mindset as it looks to fill other holes in its roster.

“I think clearly a lot of heavy lifting needed to take place this winter, and it has taken place,” Cashman said, via the New York Daily News. “I think we’re always looking to improve. I don’€™t think it’s realistic to think that there will be more heavy lifting that can take place. But I also don’t want to say that we’€™re not going to try to improve ourselves. We’re just going to have to realistically do it in a much cheaper way going forward.”

With its acquisition of Tanaka, New York surpasses the luxury-tax threshold of $189 million.

Cashman acknowledged that many will question the security of his infield as Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira both return from seasons that were stymied  by injuries. The replacement for Robinson Cano, Brian Roberts, also needs to prove that he can remain healthy after he played just 77 games for the Orioles last season.

“I think the entire infield is something people will focus on,” Cashman said. “What’s Brian Roberts going to be, what’s Derek Jeter going to be as he comes back from his injury, Mark Teixeira be coming back from his wrist, Kelly Johnson at third? And anybody else brought in to compete or fill in.

“Those things will have to play themselves out and answer themselves.”

Cashman’€™s comments come one day after Red Sox general Manager Ben Cherington said he had no update on Drew.

“I’d really rather just keep it to, we have a lot of respect for him and we respect his decision and the factors that he’s considering,” Cherington told reporters at Tuesday’s Hot Stove Cool Music roundtable. “We have issues of our own. We’re mostly focused on those issues. We’re mostly focused on what we feel is right for us and what is best, because there’s a mutual respect with him.”
