David Ortiz on critics: ‘I’m tired of hearing them talk [expletive] about me when I talk about my contract’

David Ortiz arrived at Red Sox spring training Tuesday, and he wasn’t shy about sharing his opinion regarding those who criticize him for talking about his contract situation.

Last month Ortiz — coming off a season in which he hit .309/.395/.564 with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs and then having a World Series MVP performance — said he wanted to extend his contract, which ends after this season. The response from Red Sox Nation was mixed, and he’s been questioned about it by the media repeatedly since then.

“I just want people to stop talking to me about that,” Ortiz told the Boston Herald after taking batting practice and signing autographs. “When you put up numbers like I’m putting up, who’s thinking about retiring, know what I’m saying? People keep on asking me, how long do you want to play? When are you going to retire? Dude, look at my numbers. I ain’t planning on retiring right now. When I slow down, then I’ll retire.”

Despite his productive 2013, critics point to his age (38) and injuries that have hampered him over the past couple of seasons, as well as the fact that he’s a designated hitter.

“It’€™s always like that,” he said. “There are always people like that, they never agree with things. It doesn’€™t matter how good you are or how much you get it done. It’€™s hard for them to agree, to know reality, to know the truth, to know what a true player is. The bottom line is, people like that, you just don’€™t pay attention to them. It’€™s a small group, and yeah, they’€™re the ones who like to bring negativity and talk trash, but nobody knows what it takes for a guy like me to do what I do.

“The problem is, they like to attack me, but once the season starts and the season is over, they don’€™t say nothing in my favor. The trash they were talking this offseason, why didn’€™t they say it while the season was going?”

Ortiz is slated to make $15 million this year, and in his view that’s a bargain.

“I don’€™t even know why they’€™re bitching about me talking about contracts,” he said. “Guys putting up my numbers, they’€™re making [$]25 [million], [$]30 million. I’€™m not asking for that. I’€™m asking for half of it. And they’€™re still bitching about it? [Expletive] them. I’€™m tired of hearing them talk [expletive] about me when I talk about my contract. Hey, every time I talk about my contract, I earn it, [expletive]. So don’€™t be giving me that [expletive].”
