It was a Mother’s Day to forget for the Red Sox.

Not only did starter Drew Pomeranz leave after the the third inning with left triceps soreness, the worst had yet to come as Robbie Ross Jr. and Heath Hembree allowed a combined seven runs in the ninth inning to punctuate a 11-2 loss to the Rays on a rainy, cool Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park.

The game lasted four hours and 32 minutes in miserable conditions.

Unlike the final score indicates, the Red Sox were actually in the game the entire way.

They trailed 2-1 after two, 3-1 after four and then 4-2 after seven until the bullpen melted down in the ninth.

In the ninth, Tampa scored seven runs on eight hits. Overall, Ross Jr. allowed three runs on three hits and then Hembree allowed four runs, including a homer, in 1/3 of an inning of work.

The biggest takeaway from the game is now the starting rotation desperately needs David Price to return from his elbow injury. (For more on his progress, click here.)

The Sox were already searching for a fifth starter after Kyle Kendrick couldn’t get it done after replacing Steven Wright, and now it appears they will need to find a replacement for Pomeranz if he’s out for an extended period of time.

The No. 4 and 5 spots in the rotation having issues has put tons of pressure on the bullpen, and led to games like Sunday.

At the plate, the Red Sox finished with just six hits as a team. Christian Vazquez led the way by going 2-for-4.

The 4:32 time of game fell just 13 minutes shy of the all-time record for a 9-inning MLB game.
