Noe Ramirez

With the amount of innings the bullpen has logged of late, the Red Sox were in need of a reliever so they made a roster move Friday afternoon.

The team recalled right-handed reliever Noe Ramirez and optioned left-hander Robbie Ross Jr. back to Triple-A Pawtucket.

One thought was the team would option Thursday’s starter Hector Velazquez back, but the organization likely wants to make sure David Price gets through his rehab outing Friday night.

Ramirez has gone 0-1 with two saves and a 2.53 ERA in nine appearances with the PawSox this season, recording nine strikeouts against two walks while holding opponents to a .231 batting average.

In eight games with the Red Sox this season, Ross Jr. has an ERA of 7.00.

Koji Uehara

Koji Uehara

Some help could be on the way for the Red Sox bullpen.

Reliever Koji Uehara, out since July 19 with a pectoral injury that threatened his season, was activated on Monday, when the Red Sox open a three-game series with the San Diego Padres, but won’t be available until Tuesday.

Uehara threw a simulated game on Saturday and emerged feeling strong, so the Red Sox activated him. He’s 2-3 with a 4.50 ERA this year, but if healthy would go a long way towards solving the team’s issues in the eighth inning.

The 41-year-old has struck out 51 and walked nine in 36 innings.

Fore more on Uehara’s activation, check out Rob Bradford’s Red Sox notebook.

In other roster news, the Red Sox also officially summoned catcher Christian Vazquez and right-handers Heath Hembree and Noe Ramirez to the active roster.

Koji Uehara

The news isn’t so good for Koji Uehara.

After leaving Tuesday’s game after seven pitches, Uehara has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right pectoral strain. To fill his spot on the roster, right-hander Noe Ramirez has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Pitching with a 4-0 lead in the ninth, Uehara felt discomfort in his pec after a strikeout and was removed from the game. The 41-yrar-old is 2-3 with six saves and a 4.50 ERA in 39 appearances this season. He was the closer with Craig Kimbrel on the disabled list himself.
